EPISODE 1 (Pulse of Awakening / Awakening)
---SPOILER AHEAD---
The show begins
when the pulse of awakening is initiated. All
proxies feel or hear the pulse. Even the unconscious Monad suddenly wakes up even
though she is sedated. Other than changing the nature of Amrita
cells, the pulse of awakening also makes proxies become aggressive, insane and
destructive. Monad revolts and runs away from the lab. The dark figure in a
gate, proxy One, states his resentment towards the Creator because proxies
cannot resist being killed by the pulse of awakening. He wants to avenge them. One comes back to Romdeau to prepare his revenge tool,
Ergo/Vincent.
There are the newly appointed Security Bureau Chief, Raul Creed, and his entourage, Kristeva. The outbreak of the Cogito virus makes some autoreivs go mad and kills citizens. The Bureaus are investigating this matter. Re-l makes her way to Disposal Unit to meet Vincent, who captured and shut down infected autoreivs. Disposal Unit hunts down infected autoreivs as they are sometimes dangerous for human. The Cogito virus makes human cannot control autoreivs like robot anymore since they have self-awareness. Vincent boss addresses Re-l as Your Excellency indicating her as high-ranked citizen even though she did not like it. Re-l gives Vincent some tips to get citizen approval.
Re-l goes on to continue autoreivs investigation to old Immigration Bureau building. She is not supposed to be there, but curiosity is her strength. She finds an autoreiv, Mary. Mary seems like normal robot. After killing several people, Monad hides and observes Re-l. She floats above Re-l and slaps her gun. Re-l manages to shoot her but Monad moves too fast. Re-l noticed Mary is doing praying posture, a sign of an infected autoreiv. She is infected when Monad showed up. Mary escapes and breaks her leg. Monad hides in the air vent and watches Re-l left. Monad knows exactly what Re-l is and follows her.
Vincent is
tasked to check an autoreiv belongs to Raul’s family. Raul’s wife tries to
exchange a companion type autoreiv, Pino, for housekeeper type autoreiv to help
her raise a baby. Vincent cannot approve this since Pino is
not infected. Raul’s wife tries to scare Vincent using her husband’s
position and reminds him of his status as immigrant.
Raul comes to the Regent, Donov Mayer to consult about escaping proxy, infected autoreivs and fallen citizens. The Regent is surrounded by an autoreiv by his side and four Collective autoreivs in the form of statues. He never speaks and uses the Collective to communicate with visitors. The Regent and the Collective gasp when they hear Raul asking permission to kill the proxy. Little does he know that the existence of Romdeau depends on a proxy. The Regent assigns him to capture her alive. He does not value much about citizen life. The loss citizens can simply be replaced by increasing production of artificial womb.
Vincent receives a report that there is an infected autoreiv (near Re-l apartment). He goes there to check and finds lifeless Mary. He unconsciously transforms into Ergo and crashes into Re-l bathroom. He is drawn into her because he senses Monad in Re-l. Ergo seems fascinated by Re-l, not knowing that she is what Ergo wanted to become: a human without the proxy side. Also Vincent is in love with her. Re-l feels fear, but also certain pull towards Ergo because she is Monad human clone. Monad who followed Re-l also lands in Re-l’s bathroom because of her intuition to be with Ergo. She attacks Ergo/Vincent, her beloved. She lost her sanity and is affected by the awakening. Ergo/Vincent is surprised thus becomes defensive and fights Monad. Monad stands and feels confused or offended or sad. Re-l is shocked, then faints.

The first thing that Proxy One planted to sabotage Vincent journey |
Details and Easter Eggs:
- The
pulse of awakening signifies that the main
plan of space human or Boomerang project is a success. The thing that will
happen next is proxies’ elimination. It fuels proxy One’s hatred to his creator.
- Vincent
survives
after being highly thrown by an armed autoreiv in 04.00. The only logical explanation is because he is a not a regular human. However, he is denial. He should have known that event like this will send any normal human to hospital. Instead, he casually walks and works.
- Vincent falls from his bike because he feels the pulse of awakening.
- Every citizen has at least one autoreiv to accompany, help their job, guide or protect them.
- The
citizens rely so much on their autoreivs. Some cases are when Vincent’s boss
(who look like Adolf Hitler) makes approval
decision, Pino reminds her ‘mother’ of the housework and Iggy bans Re-l on her actions. Is it human that controls the robot or the robot that
controls human?
- Since
autoreivs are controlled by the Collective, Donov can control and watch all citizens.
- The Collective consists of four autoreivs. They are four individuals as well as a unit. They are independent, not a part of Donov. But Donov can use them to ‘speak’. The Collective also probably advises Donov. They can make hypothesis, premises, reasoning and deduction algorithm. But the final decision is Donov’s.
- Romdeau
citizens are invited to make waste. The waste creates global warming. Then it helps
earth ecological cycle running.
- The alphabet cereal in Vincent’s bowl is spelled awakening. Ergo Proxy series is pretty realistic, so this poetic coincidence cannot happen. The cereal appears like that, most likely because it is Vincent’s subconscious after hearing the pulse or it is the job of proxy One.
- Monad goes berserk and kills 4 people in the old building. She recognizes another form of her in Re-l. That’s why she does not harm Re-l in the building.
- Cogito virus gives autoreivs self-awareness. Human cannot control them anymore. Thus, the infected autoreivs are useless for citizens. Vincent and other Disposal Unit workers hunt and destroy the infected autoreivs. Knowing people hunting them, infected autoreivs like Mary try to escape Romdeau.
- Mary is likely killed by proxy One after he planted the awakening message.
