ERGO PROXY EPISODE 2: PLOT AND EXPLANATION

EPISODE 2 (Confession of a Fellow Citizen / confession)

---SPOILER AHEAD---

Vincent is found unconscious near Re-l apartment and being investigated. Re-l is asked to point out which immigrant who attacked her on the night before. Raul through Security Bureau tried to cover proxy story by discrediting Re-l and frames Vincent. Re-l does not believe that boring-faced fellow citizen breaks into her place, very different from monstrous Ergo. Ironically, Raul is actually right to put Vincent as a suspect.

Re-l is released from her duties as an Intelligence Bureau agent because she is reported to have a hallucination by the Security Bureau. She is forced to take a psychological examination from Daedalus, Head of Health and Welfare Bureau. Iggy’s memory of proxy related investigation is erased. These are Raul’s effort to gaslight Re-l. Re-l goes to Daedalus as she was told to. As a childhood friend, Re-l trusts Daedalus. She is about to tell him about the monsters. After seeing ‘pathological liar’ on her diagnosis (which is an order of the Collective), she is discouraged that Daedalus may think she has gone mad. She pretends to be limp so Daedalus leaves her alone to prepare brain scanning. She uses the chance to peek Daedalus data, then she finds the term proxy as a specimen that Romdeau was researching.

Re-l tries to search the term proxy through Iggy, her entourage autoreiv. Iggy can access Romdeau bank data. Instead of getting the answer, Iggy search attempt is forcefully cut. Immediately, the Regent calls Re-l through Iggy. Re-l realizes that Iggy is a mean of spying used by her grandfather. She cancels her plan to go to the mall and goes to her grandfather’s. In the throne room, Re-l demands an explanation about proxy from the Regent. He ignores Re-l’s question and threatens her to be put back under Administration Bureau supervision. Re-l backs off and promises not to snoop around.

The Romdeau citizens are used to living in dystopian. Seeing violence like this is very rare thus they reacts very slowly in this event. They are not expressive and emotionless. The distinction between pseudo human and autoreiv is blurry.

From the CCTV record, Raul realizes that there were 2 proxies on Re-l attack. He then goes to the mall to meet his wife and his newly given baby. A scream is heard in the mall. Vincent (who has been released) seems running and shoots his gun. In the corner, Monad appears. She runs after Vincent and gets rid citizens and autoreivs stand in her way. Vincent runs in the direction of Raul’s wife and baby and causes them to be slit and tossed by Monad. Pino is touched by Monad and unharmed. She catches Cogito and does praying pose. The attack causes 42 casualties.

Raul is shocked but manages to suppress his feeling. He activates barrier walls around the mall. Monad is blocked by the wall but she breaks it. Monad corners Vincent and slowly tries to hug him (so not to cause him to panic). Vincent unconsciously throws a weird look as he is about to shift to Ergo. Being nervous and pushed by the pulse of awakening, he kills Monad. Pino goes back to her/Raul’s house and wears rabbit pajamas. The Disposal Unit arrives there to hunt her down.

All the warning and accusation do not stop Re-l from snooping around. Instead, it makes her eager to uncover hidden truth. Re-l goes back to her apartment ruin. She finds Vincent’s necklace (with proxy pendant) in her bathroom.

Details and Easter Eggs:

  • Immigrants are the object of racism in Romdeau. They are considered as low-class. It can be seen by Raul wife’s speech to Vincent and the use of immigrant list as Re-l’s suspect attacker. They are given dangerous jobs in Disposal Unit. For the Collective, their lives are not worthy. They are not the product of Romdeau meticulous plan. In later episode, it is mentioned that there is segregation between fellow citizens or Romdeau-born and immigrants.

  • Raul uses mental health problem (unable to differentiate between reality and hallucination) as a way to discredits Re-l. Like karma, he is the one who is mentally disturbed in episode 17.

  • Raul suddenly changes the computer view when Kristeva came in. He knows that the Regent is spying everyone through autoreivs. He holds some facts to himself.

  • Notice how Iggy runs in 16.05. Re-l sets Iggy to have gay style.

  • Raul suppresses his reaction after he sees his family slaughtered because in Romdeau feelings are considered not important and sometimes seen as an obstacle of objectives. He knows this very well. When Re-l was frustrated after being attacked by Ergo/Vincent, an autoreiv automatically asks her to calm down. The autoreiv maintains and educates every citizen to be emotionally stable, almost like a robot.

  • Monad lost sanity after Ergo memory removal. She becomes aggressive because of the pulse of awakening. But she still has the urge instinct to be with Ergo/Vincent.

  • The mall incident is the point where Raul becomes obsessed with Vincent because Vincent is indirectly the cause he lost his family.
