ERGO PROXY PLOT AND DETAILS EXPLAINED

CRACKING ONE OF THE MOST MIND SCREW SERIES
ERGO PROXY PLOT AND DETAILS EXPLAINED

(SPOILER AHEAD)

Ergo Proxy (2006) is a complex anime series formed of carefully designed plot, well-constructed characters and well put references. It has many elements including cyberpunk sci-fi, mystery, adventure, suspense, film noir, psychology, philosophy and possibly religion. Since it has complex plot and many elements, many people drop this series even get bored on the first episode just because they do not comprehend or notice the details. To be honest, I am not a fan of anime or philosophy (yet). This show exceeds my expectation of the genre.

The show makers do not randomly throw philosophy, psychology or other elements to the scenes. Instead they use them to support the story and create several layers of understanding. Even though the story is not straightforward, the reality of the plot is not blurred with dream or illusion. In fact, the writers are scientifically well-researched. They use the real knowledge of DNA, genes, psychology and geology to draw the story. In the upper layers, they add philosophy and religion to cover them. Many people misunderstand and think that the writers only rely on philosophy.

This series is made to be confusing.  The story can be understood by connecting the dots, events and clues. The viewers need to be curious and act like investigators to understand. Every scene, name, number, color, facial expression and speech is intentional by the show makers

This article is written to explain the overall story and some details on the series. I will not go deeper into philosophical or other layers. I believe there will be people who make books, theses or journals based on Ergo Proxy years after it was aired. The Context and Background Story are made for easier understanding. Reading this article even only reading each episode without watching the entire series will break the surprise spell.
