THE CONTEXT
The event of
Ergo Proxy happens in post-apocalyptic future where an ecological disaster
happened. Humankind found a new source of
energy, methane hydrate that replaced petrol and atomic energy in the second
half of 21st century (ep 15: 18.28). However the energy source exploded, then caused 85% living things on earth to die. Moreover,
the air became toxic. The sky was layered with clouds all the time, then resulted ice age. The earth is inhabitable for
human.
Humankind made
several plans to preserve humanity. Plan A is the original human
fled using a spaceship called Boomerang Star and orbitted the earth. Due to limitation space of the ark, not everyone
could get on board. Some were left behind on earth. As the name suggests, the
Boomerang Project was meant to go back to earth once it became
habitable.
The space human
started Proxy Project (PP). The Proxy Project created 300 proxies who were
tasked to build a dome for each proxy along with artificial womb
and autoreivs (android robot). The artificial wombs acquire energy
from proxy to create pseudo-human. The pseudo-human is
a copy
of
original space human and could not reproduce naturally. Pseudo human can only
live inside the dome due to toxic air. For pseudo-human and autoreivs,
proxies were the Creator or God since they provided life and built the livable
dome cities. For proxies, the original human is their Creator.
The heat from
domes and human waste warmed the earth and helped the ecosystem cycle to flow again. Both domes and space human would repopulate
the world once the methane gas dissipated and it was livable again.
The plan B is if the space ark failed, then there was
still pseudo-human who lived on earth. If the plan A works, the
proxies are eliminated, thus also
eliminating pseudo human.
The plan C is the Cogito virus which is made by human and
built into Proxy Project. Autoreivs are android
robots used to serve human and proxy. Their tasks are vary including as a work
assistant or director, companion, protector, military, medic, child substitute,
cook, gardener, etc. Any autoreiv catches the Cogito virus will gain consciousness or free-will
or self-awareness just like mankind. The free-will
unties autoreiv from raison d’etre imposed by human
or proxy. If space human and pseudo human failed, there would still be humanity
in android vessel existing on earth. If plan A or B works, the Cogito virus is not supposed to
spread.
Raison d’etre is reasons
to live/exist. It is programmed to every pseudo human, autoreiv even proxy to make them
functional pawns. Anything that an individual does in life is based on the raison d’etre. Raison d’etre is a practical way to keep order in deteriorated earth.
Creating pseudo human is included in PP merely as a test
for the environment. If they are able to live outside the dome, it means that
original human can also live. It is a sign the environment heals. Pseudo human
is made sterile, so they will not occupy the earth when it heals. The main plan of
space human is to come back
to earth to ready-to-use environment along with living facilities (Boomerang
Project). To make this happen, they needed to wipe proxies. When the proxies
are gone, pseudo human would die out since they could not reproduce without
them. Another reason they needed to eliminate proxies was because they did not
want monstrous super strong being around when they came back. When proxies and
pseudo human are gone, they will leave domes and cities for space human.
Proxy can be considered as super intelligent being. They
built cities and make them running for thousands of years. The key is to limit
the population and give every citizen and autoreiv raison d’etre. Thanks to Amrita cells, proxy is immortal, immune to
physical damage, able to breath in toxic air and super-strong. It can be easily
imagined they also survive earth condition before building domes.
When space human
is
ready to go back to earth, they stimulate the pulse of awakening. The Pulse of the
Awakening is the end of Proxy Project or the elimination stage of proxies. It
happens when the nature heals. It is done by
initiating a signal with the later destruction of
the remaining proxies. It is audible only to
proxies. The pulse activates involuntary
genetic changes in the Amrita cells of proxies. Normally, sunray does not harm Amrita
cells. After the pulse is initiated, exposure to
sunlight is lethal for proxies. The pulse turns
them to be aggressive and destructive. When
they meet
another proxy, they will fight. The proxies
themselves can produce sunray wave through their eyes which means they can kill
each other in the awakening.
Other than the
pulse of awakening, the space human designed
them to have a ‘soul’ for creativity and leadership. It was needed
to build the dome society as well as gave them psychological time bomb. Proxy is hidden in the pseudo human society. Proxies have
lived for thousands of years in each dome (one proxy for one dome) thus
they felt lonely. To
reduce the loneliness, they might flee their own domes and searched other
proxies. But they have a responsibility to maintain the dome. If a
proxy leaves, its dome will crumble since proxy powers artificial womb and dome
life support. This
condition causes proxy
complex like
suicidal and self-destructive towards proxy’s own domes.
For proxies,
their raison d’etre or duties are to restore the human population (if BP fails), to fix the earth and to die once
the pulse is activated. In summary, when the pulse is initiated, all proxies will
seek death by fighting other proxies or get burnt in
sunlight. They bring the pseudo human society down along
with their death, because pseudo human cannot reproduce
without proxy.
The space human designs the whole PP to speed up the earth recovery and leave
them empty hooked cities when they got back to earth.
BACKGROUND STORY
The original
Ergo proxy, proxy One, built Romdeau as a utopian dome city along with
autoreivs. In his early time, he was worshiped by his creations. Time passed
by and he started to feel the psychological problems. He realized that his
society failed. Pseudo human loses sense of
humanity: rigid and emotionless. They are merely
robot in human body. He
fell in solitude. His half alive creation cannot understand the proxy burden. He
lost hope in his society. He wanted to leave his duty as a proxy. Thus he split himself and created his other
self, Ergo proxy/proxy 301 to nurture Romdeau. Being the perfect clone, proxy 301 has proxy One’s
memory and ‘soul’.
Being the exact
copy of proxy One, Ergo/proxy 301 also lost hope then fled from Romdeau. Before
that, he bestowed the leadership to Donov Mayer. Ergo/ proxy 301 headed to
Mosk, proxy Monad’s (proxy 13) dome. Ergo is
the agent of death while
Monad is
the agent of birth. They love each
other as counter polar just like Yin and Yang. Monad loves proxy One as well as
proxy 301 considering they are one. In hope to subside proxy 301’s suffering,
she erased
his memory even though she could not handle it. Proxy 301 or Monad then locked the
memory in a chamber under Mosk and left an autoreiv, Amnesia, to take care of
it. The chamber could only be opened by a proxy pendant. Monad gave her own pendant to Ergo/proxy 301 so he could one
day open the chamber if he decided he wanted his memories back. After the
memory lost, Vincent Law persona was born. Monad lost her sanity because of the
memory removal.
Back in Romdeau,
Donov Mayer felt abandoned by his God. He grudged Monad who stole
his patron. Out of sentiment, he launched thermonuclear missiles and sent
armies to Mosk. Some parts of Mosk dome were
intact because proxies can withstand thermonuclear missiles. Other parts are destroyed by Romdeau armed autoreivs. Monad apparently
became weaker after the memory removal that decreased her defense toward missiles
and army attack altogether. Like other domes that need proxies to survive, she
was snatched from Mosk and brought to Romdeau as Ergo/Vincent’s substitute. Vincent
in human form who did not remember he is Ergo proxy was brought back to Romdeau
along with other Mosk’s survivors as immigrant (unbeknownst to anyone in Romdeau
except Proxy One).
Proxy One figured
out the Proxy Project motives (other proxies also acknowledged as well). Proxies
and their creations are going to be wiped out once they
fulfilled their purpose. He decided to punish his Creators and have vengeance.
He planned to destroy the livable habitats (the domes), so the
humans from space would have nothing to live in when they came back. Proxy One
launched some rocket missiles and destroyed several domes. During the time Ergo/Vincent was controlling Romdeau, proxy
One left Romdeau. He probably destroyed other domes.
Another reason
proxy One created Ergo/proxy 301 is to provide a revenge tool for the Creator. Having
proxy One’s memory, proxy 301 also knew the true meaning of the proxies’
existence and what their true roles were. Proxy One wasn’t pleased with Monad,
having his revenge tool snatched away and memory cleaned. Ergo/Vincent losing
memory means he forgot the PP motives thus became useless.
Donov Mayer ordered to create a human clone of Monad. The clone is used as a bait to attrack Ergo back to Romdeau. Donov wants something that Ergo loves, but is easier to control. She is then named Re-l Mayer. Re-l is an imperfect or partial clone of Monad. Donov adopted Re-l as his granddaughter. Re-l grew up not knowing about Monad or Ergo.
