ERGO PROXY EPISODE 14: PLOT AND EXPLANATION

EPISODE 14 (SOMEONE LIKE YOU / OPHELIA)

---SPOILER AHEAD---

The trio arrives at an unnamed dome city. The city is beautiful, dense and fine. But not a single person or autoreiv lives there. The trio takes supplies from the Ophelia supermarket in the city. Re-l checks the lake in the center of the dome because she sees it glittering. She is observed by an unnamed proxy in the lake who keeps changing shape imitating the trio. The proxy takes Re-l form, goes to the Rabbit and releases it.

The original trio gathers at supermarket food corner. Pino makes an abominable salad for Re-l and Vincent. Re-l does not want to eat so she leaves them to stand guard. Vincent decides to eat Pino’s salad. Fake Re-l eats on the dining table telling Vincent to relax. Vincent gives her ginger ale. Pino stares at her in wonder.

The proxy changes shape to Vincent. He gives the ginger ale to Re-l in the rooftop. The copycat proxy thinks that Re-l and Vincent are a lovey dovey couple with a human child. He tries to get physical affection from Re-l. Re-l pushes him until he falls. When she goes down to check, the fake Vincent vanishes.

Most likely the copycat proxy manipulates Re-l’s mind to cause a conflict between Re-l and Pino. Re-l rages thinking Pino intends to kill her. Vincent locks Re-l in the warehouse. The copycat proxy releases the original Re-l then falls from the rooftop as fake Re-l. Vincent and Pino go to check her. Vincent sees a shadow on the rooftop (original Re-l) and run to check, leaving Pino with fake Re-l. Original Re-l points her gun at Vincent at the rooftop. She knows that there are two Vincent but she cannot tell if that Vincent is real or not. She leaves him on the rooftop and locks the door. The fallen fake Re-l disappears.

Original Re-l is captured by copycat proxy imitating Vincent. Fake Vincent carrying Re-l and Pino walk to the lake. The fake Vincent puts Re-l in the water to sink her. Then s/he keeps pretending to be Vincent to gain Pino’s love. Pino confronts that he is fake Vincent. The proxy tries to strangle Pino only to reveal that she is an autoreiv. Failed to strangle Pino, s/he runs away. Pino dives to save Re-l.

The original Vincent checks everywhere to find Re-l and Pino. The Rabbit has flown. He thinks Re-l and Pino left him. He goes to the lake and sees fake Re-l drowning. Fake Re-l drags Vincent underwater. Vincent proxy instinct kicks in. The copycat proxy realizes Vincent is a proxy as well.

The copycat proxy gives city life flashback in Vincent’s mind. The people are scared whenever s/he appears. S/he explains the solitude because nobody accepts him. The loneliness makes him to pretend to be someone else’s love. But he then realizes that it is not himself that is loved. S/he is no one because s/he has no identity, thus no one loves him. He tries to kill himself, but he cannot. He then eliminates everyone.

S/he shows Vincent all the preserved citizen bodies that he killed under the lake. Vincent emerges from the water and sees fake Re-l repeatedly. Vincent decides to strangle her. Fake Pino screams in horror and runs. This is all actually only on Vincent’s mind. The copycat proxy tries to influence Vincent to die together with him.

Re-l sees two Vincent standing on the lake: the original with his shadow reflected in the water and the fake with no water reflection. Both Vincent and the copycat proxy go underwater. A blue proxy light shines on the lake. Vincent and his water reflection emerge. He killed the proxy with proxy death stare. The trio continues the journey. After meeting the copycat proxy, Vincent becomes more positive than ever.

Details and Easter Eggs:

  • The afterlife opening by Re-l shows how entitled she was as a kid. She thought that the world revolved around her. It explains that she was spoiled by everyone. They centered their attention around her since she was a child. But her quote in the 1st episode "But perhaps I, who look at the others from below, am the useless element." shows that she has evolved. She is aware that Romdeau is bigger than her. For Romdeau’s sake, she and other unnecessary elements can be erased anytime.

  • From the earlier episodes, it can be concluded that Re-l is very goal oriented person and dislikes procrastination. When Re-l tells Vincent to take it slow, she is fake.

  • Vincent is infatuated with Re-l but he is not pushy. The scene where the fake Vincent forces Re-l then pretends to fall and faint is peculiar.

  • The copycat proxy’s first objective is to make the trio stay in the dome. That is why s/he tells them to relax and stay. After s/he heard Re-l insists to leave or failed to gain their love, s/he proceeds to kill them.

  • The copycat proxy sinks Re-l in the lake to preserve her like other citizens. S/he does this to feel less lonely.

  • Autoreivs can detect heart beats. It is explained by bookstore proxy that every individual beats differently based on the heart capacity. This is one of the ways autoreivs differentiate beings. It is how Pino notices the fake one.

  • The copycat proxy gives city life flashback from his memory. There is no autoreiv seen. The proxy probably designed the city without autoreiv so that nothing can point out when s/he imitates other people.

  • Even though the copycat proxy is lack of expression and emotion on imitating Re-l and Vincent, s/he is correct to guess Vincent is not accepted everywhere and brings death to the people around him. It can be concluded that all proxies experience this.

  • The copycat proxy does not leave a reflection in the water probably because s/he does not have or forget his true form or identity. S/he seems to be weak physically. S/he does not try to kill the trio using physical way other than to strangle them.

  • This episode shows Vincent character development. He understands proxy loneliness and solitude. But Re-l and Pino changes his view of his life because they accept him. He will keep on living because he has faith in them. This episode influences his decision to stay alive in the final episode.
